Musky Books

  1. Pro Tactics: MuskieThis is a really well organized book. The first thing that is covered is the mental game of dedicated musky fishing. You might not think this is important but as you’ll fins out in that chapter it’s huge. They then get into tackle. The 4th chapter is the most important in my book. It’s “necessary tools and release techniques”. Muskies might seem to be a beast of a fish but they are a whole lot more fragile than most people realize. Chapter 5 is about follows, which you’ll see plenty of, figure 8′s and triggering fish. They cover great territory here. After that they cover all the seasonal tendencies of musky which makes up the next 5 chapters. The last chapter is bringing it all together which is exactly what it does.
  2. Musky Mastery This book was published in the early 90′s but the info is still very relevant. It covers all the major techniques that the top guides used. From top water to jigs and even night fishing. The author goes out with each of the guides and discusses a tactic with them. There’s all kinds of great info ad little tips that are SO easy to forget about. This was actually my first musky book and I’m very glad I read it.Here are a list of the great musky fisherman that are interviewed (many of which you’ll recognize from looking at musky lures available):
    • Joe Langley – night fishing
    • Gene Curtis – Jigs and Reapers
    • Roger Sabota – Surface baits
    • Pete Maina – Twitching
    • Dick Moore – Bucktails
    • Joe Bucher – Night Fishing
    • Brian Long – Trolling
    • Dave Dorazio – Jerk Baits
    • Bruce Shumway – Vertical Jigging
    • Peter Haupt – Crankbaits
    • Steve Herbeck – Sucker Fishing
  3. Becoming a Musky Hunter
I like the way this book is approached. He takes it from the angle of someone that is a normal person with family and responsibilities. Meaning they cant invest absolutely insane amounts of cash into gear and tackle. He covers all the major lures types and other accessories like fishfinders and GPS. The overall theme of the book is to keep it reasonable with a healthy dose of what to expect when the musky addiction takes over.
