Pro Tactics: Muskie by jack burns and rod kimm
When it comes to chasing muskie 2 things are critical – good information and time on the water actually fishing for them. So to continue my education I figured it was time to invest in some books. After looking around one book I settled on is Pro Tactics: Muskie by Jack Burns and Rob Kimm.
I picked this book because it seemed to cover all the things I needed including a muskies typical seasonal patterns. The authors do a great job of covering thier chosen topics. Thier writting style is nice and comfortable to read and their passion for ‘skies it very evident especially in the chapter Necessary tools and Release techniques. The fact that they have a chapter dedicated to one of the most important aspects of muskie fishing speaks to their love of this fish. I’ve seen alot of books that just barely touch on the subject.
Chapter 3 muskie tackle really opened my eyes on a lot of things. First I quickly discovered that I was working a lot harder than I had to when casting. My choice of rods for the different lures was way off. After that chapter I started using one of my 9′ trolling rods for casting in addition to my 6 footer and I’m much happier now. Adding the longer rod has really increased the amount of time I can cast without becoming exhausted. Most people dont realize just how much work it is casting huge lures for hours on end. I know I didn’t.
In chapter 3 I also learned that I was over-looking a whole box full of lures that I never even considered before! Spoons and big rubberskirted bass jigs. They also stressed the importance of top water lures. Outside of using my plugs for twitching I really didn’t have any and figured it wasn’t that important. OOPPSS. As I read this book it became more than evident that you can’t limit yourself on tactics. There is a time and place for every type of lure out there. The trick is knowing when that time is! Time on the water and learing your home body of water is the only way figure that out.
Another great chapter is #5 – Follows, figure 8′s and triggering fish. If your new to muskies you’ll soon realize just how important this chapter is. Muskies are notorious for following your lure right to the boat and you better know how to handle that situation. If you dont then you’ll miss a huge quantity of chances to catch’em. One things I quickly put into practice was doing a figure 8 or oval at the end of every cast. Little did I realize how bad I was at it!!! I figured a figure 8 how difficult can that be? Again ooppss. Each type of lure you throw acts differently and getting the figure 8 right is surprisingly difficult. You have to coordinate reeling, turning and accelerating your lure all in one smooth motion with the rod tip in the water. Practice is the only way to get better at it and that’s what I’m doing lots of. I’ll even play around with it when I’m out fishing for bass just to help the process along.
Overall I’m quite impressed with Pro Tactics: Muskie and whole heartedly recommend it to anyone that wants to learn a great deal about muskie fishing.
