5/2/10 fishing report

After the storms rolled through Sunday morning Jake & I hit the water. We launched from harley and headed for the north channel. After slowly working my way through the channel behind grass island because the buoy’s aren’t out yet, we headed down the Sni. We spent most of the day in there trying various things for pike without any luck. The water temp was pretty cool at 51 degrees or so. The part the sucked was that I marked fish, lots of fish but nothing was wiling to bite. More than likely it was due to the second day of storms rolling through. After we worked over the spots in there we decided to try our hand at some bass fishing.

We headed south and set up some drifts between selfridge launch and the salt river. The water temp was much higher low 60′s. The wind was out of the south so we drifted at an angle toward shore. We started in 6 FOW and headed back out when we got to about 5 FOW. I tossed nothing but rattlin’ raps, largemouth pattern, gold and a orange belly spottail. As seems to be typical I catch largemouth on the largemouth pattern rap, In total I boated 4 largies on that bait. All around 1 – 2 pounds.

In total we made 4 drifts before heading in. First pass I boated 2 largies. Second pass 2 smallies on the gold rap. Third pass I boated another largie and jake boated one as well. Fourth pass I boated another largie and jake lost a good smallie.

In total we fished for bass for about 3 hours so all in all considering the weather we did pretty good with fast moving baits. We might have done better if one of us was throwing a tube but we didn’t bring any so that will be the tactic for another day!

Jake played around with some rattle traps and cotton cordell lipless rattle baits. I’m not sure why but those just don’t seem to work as well on St. Clair. So if you’re thinking about chasing smallies on St. Clair you’ve got to get some rattlin raps. They’ve always worked for me all season long.
