Musky Trolling on the Candian Side of LSC

A couple of days ago me and a friend of mine went out and trolled for muskies on the canadian side of lake saint clair.

We launched out of crocker and headed for the weather buoy. The lake was like glass. When we got out there we saw 1 charter boat trolling around the buoy. So we headed fairly close to it and set my new planer boards up. After putting the lures out. I put a purple bucktail with gold blade and a big believer out while bill used 2 perch super shad raps. I thought he should put a little more variety out there but those are his confidence baits so that’s what he used. I trolled the boat along at 3.8 – 4.2 miles per hour. A typical speed that most people start out with.

The set up on the baits was pretty simple. The buckie was 20 feet back with a 2 oz weight as the outside line and the believer I set at about 30 foot back with 4 ounces of weight to really get it deep. Bill ran both his shad raps out about 60 – 70 feet with no weight. We did a lap around the buoy with nothing happening so we headed south toward the belle river hump. After moving south about a mile we ran into nothing but floating weeds so we turned back around & cleared all the lure of weeds. We did another lap around the buoy this time further out with nothing happeneing so I headed north toward the firecracker. Which was where all the charter boats seemed to be focusing. Something I noticed is that I only marked fish north of the buoy. While we were trolling around north of the buoy a few more charter boats joined the party.

Every hour or so I changed up the baits, depth and even the speed just to see what might trigger the fish. Bill though he just kept trolling his beloved shad raps. The only thing he did was clear the weeds.

As the hours past we saw 1 boat in particular bring in 2 really nice musky. They trolled the same line no matter if they were gong north or south. I tried sliding in a half mile or so behind them but got nothin. So we tried a differnet angle through an area that we didn’t cover, basically between the buoy and the saint clair light. By this time it was approaching sunset and surprisingly bill decided to change the inner line to a golden shiner shad rap and run it straight behind the boat. We trolled for a while longer and bill cleared the weeds from his golden shiner. He then started bringing in the outer line on his side when the flat line started screaming! Talk about a shock to us both! After a few minutes of fighting I slowed the boat down to about 2 mph and bill finally got the musky to the boat! His first in 2 years! After we got the hook out it turned out to be a 39 incher. Not too bad considering it ended up being the only fish of the day.

Bills first musky in 2 yearsAs for my new planer boards, they worked great! Talk about satisfying. There is nothing better than making something yourself and having it work beautifully.
